Recommended Course Entry Requirements

Subject departments advise students to meet grade and/or other criteria before progressing to a higher level in the NCEA or CIE pathways. Students should refer to recommended course entry guidelines in planning their courses. Students who fail to meet reccommended criteria must consult with the relevant Head of Department.

Reports

Reports contain a summary of the results of assessments plus teachers' comments. They also include details of extracurricular involvement (cultural, sporting and spiritual), prizes and awards, positions of responsibility and comments by Housemasters, Tutors and the Headmaster. All students receive full academic reports at the end of term 2 and 4 with a final leavers testimonial in Year 13. Interim Academic Reports are given to all students at the end of term 1 and 3. NCEA Achievement Standards are published with academic reports at the end of term 2.

Streaming At King's College

The College firmly believes in teaching students at levels appropriate to their ability. This policy delivers the most accurate education and, through regular assessment, allows students to be either advanced or given more intensive work according to their own individual needs. The College actively encourages all students to reach their full academic potential. Therefore, all Year 9 and 10 classes are streamed according to academic potential and performance. At Years 11, 12 and 13, classes are set on a subject-by-subject basis.

Tutorsides

Following the publication of the results of each assessment (either Form Order or Internal Examination) students meet their Housemaster or Tutor to review progress to date. This provides the Housemaster, Tutor and the student with the opportunity to plan for the future and, in the case of difficulty, to find ways to improve the student's performance.

Criteria For Admission To NCEA LEVEL 2 and CIE AS Level

Students who gain their NCEA Level 1 Certificate will be admitted to Level 2. For those who fail the following possibilities will be the subject of discussions involving the student, parents, Housemaster, Careers Director, Deputy Heads of School and Dean of Senior School:

  1. The student may repeat Year 11, either studying the same subjects or choosing a new set of options
  2. The student may repeat some Year 11 subjects and take others at NCEA Level 2. The same applies to students entering the CIE examinations or a combination of NCEA and CIE.
NOTE: In all cases, but especially when the student has been permitted to proceed to either the Year 12 or 13 level, attainment levels and attitude to study will be carefully monitored by the Dean of the Senior School to ensure that the course selected meets the needs of the student and that the student is making every effort to take full advantage of the opportunities provided. Students should refer to the recommended course entry guidelines published by subject departments.

Criteria for Entry into NCEA Level 3 and CIE A LEVEL

Students who gain their NCEA Level 2 certificate will be admitted to Year
13. Entry to A2 courses is restricted and determined by performance in AS
papers. Students should refer to the recommended course entry guidelines published
by subject departments. For those who fail to meet the recommended criteria
the following discussions will be subject of discussions involving the
Student, Parents, Housemaster, Careers Director, Deputy Head of School and
Dean of Senior School.

  • The student may enter Year 13 with a negotiated course of study subject to meeting performance criteria, to be checked at regular intervals.
  • The student may repeat Year 12, either studying the same subjects or choosing a new set of options.
  • The student may repeat some Year 12 subjects and take others at NCEA Level 3.

Students taking CIE papers and NCEA Level 2 and 3 will be closely monitored to ensure that minimum University Entrance qualifications are met. Students taking A2 and AS levels will also be subject to close monitoring of their academic performance.
